We are the Smith Family - Jonathan, Mary, Nathaniel, Micah, and Millie. As new, first-generation farmers, we often get asked, "Why farm?" and it is a question we have not tired of answering. Really, there are three reasons.
We believe that the way we are farming here must be actively beneficial - to our soil and all the amazing critters that live in our soil, for starters. What is good for our soil is then good for our air and water, for the plants that grow in the soil, and for the animals that eat those plants. All of this is good for the people (and the other creatures) who breathe the air, drink the water, and eat the plants and animals - not to mention, who see and smell a beautiful farm. And what is good for people is then good for our community. Finally, ultimately, we believe that all of this good is pleasing to our Maker.
And that is good!
Science has also found that farming for healthy soil, plants, and animals can make foods that are more nutrient-dense than conventional farming, especially in the phytonutrients, vitamins, and fatty acids (trace compounds that all punch way above their nutritional weight class). And because we have been made to love what is good for us, this higher nutrient-density can actually make food taste better!
